Mittayi Project
(‘Social support scheme for children affected with juvenile diabetics’)
Mittayi is a comprehensive community-based project initiated by the Department of Social Justice through Kerala Social Security Mission to provide care to children and adolescents affected by type 1 diabetes. In Mittayi scheme, children are given modern pen insulin which is painless and easy to use.
Mittayi is a scheme that provides modern health treatment, nutrition advice and protection to children/adolescents suffering from type 1 diabetes using insulin pen, continuous glucose monitor, insulin pump etc through the services of paediatricians, nurses and dieticians. It is also a massive six-phase scheme including counselling for children, training for parents and other social security measures. Children up to 18 years of age with type 1 diabetes are served through this scheme.
Registration and follow-up are done through special software (www.mittayi.org). In the early days of the project, medicines and equipments were provided to the beneficiaries through medical colleges at Thiruvananthapuram, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Thrissur and Kozhikode only. Remaining 9 districts, where the services of Mittayi clinics were not available, satellite centres have been started so that the beneficiaries can get medicines from their respective districts without having to travel long distances.
Eligibility Criteria
a) Mittayi scheme application is accepted through online mode through the website www.mittayi.org.
b) The beneficiary (child/adolescent) should be below the age of 18 years
c) The annual family income of the applicant should be below Rs. 2 lakhs
d) The applicant/parent should be a permanent resident of Kerala
e) The child/adolescent should be certified by an empanelled doctor (under the scheme) regarding the diagnosis of T1DM and recommended therapy schedule under the project.
f) Parents of the child/adolescent should be ready to sign an informed consent before beginning the therapy.
g) Parents of the child/adolescent should be ready to undergo mandatory training including residential diabetes camps.
